What is hand-building in pottery?

Hand-building is the craft of making pottery by hand without a wheel. It relies on three classic techniques — pinch, coil and slab — that let you form bowls, mugs, plates and sculptural pieces using only your hands and simple tools. It is the oldest way to make pottery and the most beginner-friendly.

The three hand-building techniques

1. Pinch

You start with a ball of clay, press your thumb into the centre, and gently pinch and rotate to open it into a small bowl or cup. The pinch method is the simplest technique and the perfect first project for beginners and children.

2. Coil

You roll clay into long ropes (“coils”) and stack them in rings, smoothing them together to build up walls. Coiling lets you make taller and larger pieces — vases, jars and pots — and gives you control over height and shape.

3. Slab

You roll clay into flat sheets (“slabs”), then cut and join them like panels to build boxes, plates, tiles and angular forms. Slab-building is ideal for straight-sided pieces and for anyone who likes precise, geometric designs — a natural fit for Moroccan patterns.

Which technique should a beginner start with?

Technique Pour qui ? Difficulty
Pinch Small bowls, cups, first-timers Easiest
Coil Taller vases, jars, pots Moderate
Slab Plates, tiles, boxes, angular forms Moderate

Most classes start with pinch to build confidence, then introduce coil and slab as you progress. None require a wheel, which makes hand-building accessible to everyone.

Do I need special tools for hand-building?

No. You can make pinch, coil and slab pieces with your hands and a few simple tools, all of which a class provides.

What can I make as a beginner?

Simple bowls and cups with the pinch method, small vases with coils, and plates or tiles with slabs.
