Among the top tourist attractions in Marrakech is Bahia Palace. If you ever get the chance to visit Marrakech, or if you’re planning a trip there, don’t forget to add Bahia Palace to your itinerary. If you skip it, you’re missing a golden opportunity to witness the elegance and authenticity of Moroccan architecture and take a brief journey through Morocco’s rich history and ancient culture.

To start, let’s take a quick look at the history of Bahia Palace. Built in the late 19th century, it wasn’t constructed by a king but by Si Moussa, a wealthy Moroccan nobleman and the right-hand man of Sultan Hassan I. Si Moussa’s son inherited the palace after his father’s death and expanded it, adding several rooms, gardens, and courtyards. During this period, the palace gained the name “Bahia,” which means “brilliant” or “magnificent” in Moroccan dialect. The palace stood out for its elegance and beauty, especially after the renovations by Si Moussa’s son. It remained in the family’s possession until the 1950s, when the government bought it and opened it to the public as a tourist destination.

As you stand in awe before the palace’s intricate façade, particularly its detailed tile work, you step inside and feel as if you’ve entered a world of colorful zellige. These are small, intricately shaped tiles arranged in patterns that create a special charm. You’ll see them on the floors, ceilings, and walls.

Another captivating feature of the palace is its many distinct spaces. Why call them “worlds”? Because every room, courtyard, or garden feels uniquely designed. The style differs so much from one area to the next that it feels like traveling through different worlds within the same palace. Isn’t that amazing?
